Most of Iowa has had a dry stretch of weather for about a week and that has helped flood waters recede. Now, a team is stepping in to help recycle thousands of sandbags that were used to fight flooding.
Volunteers from Iowa State University and Ames drained the sand from the bags earlier.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources Waste Exchange Program collaborated with ISU's Facilities Planning and Management and Recreation Services to find homes for more than 10,000 empty sandbags.
Four-hundred of them were given to Pine Lake State Park and 500 were given to Des Moines businesses. The remaining bags were requested by North Liberty.
City leaders in north liberty say they're not just keeping the bags for their community, but also for the Army Corps of Engineers and all the communities in the Iowa City area for future flooding.
