Power To Save: RailRiders Recycling

MOOSIC - Most of us have recycling bins at home to separate glass, newspaper and plastic and now more and more recycling efforts are being done away from home.

Recycling bins have just arrived at PNC Field in Lackawanna County and they are being put to good use.

It is summer time and fans pack PNC Field in Moosic for an all-American pastime: RailRiders baseball. There's always lots of good food, plenty of drinks and fun snacks. And with a half million fans expected to walk through the gates this year, which translates into tons of garbage and recyclables.

"We need to do our best to provide recycling options and do our best for the community and our environment. We feel it's our responsibility and we take it very seriously," said RailRiders General Manager Rob Crain.

The stadium just received new recycling bins provided by Pepsi. More than a dozen bins are located all over the stadium and are shaped like a Pepsi bottle. It's a unique look that Crain says will guarantee fans won't confuse the recycling bins with the garbage cans.

"There's no confusing these things with garbage and you can't stick a nacho tray or trash through here. You can see they are for bottles and cans only."

Another huge part of production at PNC Field is shipments of merchandise, food, and equipment that are delivered on a daily basis. All the boxes will also get broken down and sent to a recycling center.

"Since the beginning, we've been recycling a lot of cardboard, actually over 25 tons of cardboard we've already recycled since the beginning of the season," Crain added.

RailRiders officials hope these two programs that will help cut back on tons of recyclables going into the landfill.
