South Coatesville mayor recognized for recycling efforts

SOUTH COATESVILLE – Mayor James Kennedy received an award Tuesday for his 23 years of service on a regional recycling authority.

Kennedy began at the Central Chester County Recycling Authority in 1990 as the representative for South Coatesville. In the same year, he became the chairman.

'We're very grateful to you, mayor,' said Bob Struble of the recycling authority.

Kennedy, in his 90s, has served 74 years in local government. This is his last year serving on the recycling authority and he is not rerunning for mayor in November.

Struble presented an award in a surprise to the mayor.

'In the authority, we're very grateful for his leadership over those years,' Struble said. 'Mayor Kennedy has done a great job in being chairman of the authority and keeping five municipalities together on target, working productively together ... '

The award states: With sincere appreciation to James C. Kennedy, chairman of Central Chester County Recycling Authority, 1990 - 2013.

'These are nice men to work with,' Kennedy said as he held his award.

In return, a member of the recycling authority handed the mayor an award to present to Struble for his service as the main engineer since 1988.

The authority represents South Coatesville, Coatesville, Modena, East Fallowfield and Valley, Struble said. The authority provides recycling support and composting services to more than 26,000 residents from the municipalities, Struble said.

Struble said over the years the authority has secured more than $600,000 in grant funding for the recycling center and for equipment at the composting site used by all municipalities. In addition, the authority has another proposal for consideration regarding leaf collection.

The Central Chester County Recycling Authority was incorporated in 1986 at the beginning of the recycling movement in Pennsylvania. The authority's recycling building is in East Fallowfield.
